Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
