Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such medications must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle support.
