Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
