The United Kingdom and the United States have forged a major commercial pact that will guarantee no tariffs on UK drug exports being sold in the US market.

The Terms of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to increase spending on drugs through the public health system. This move guarantees that import taxes on these crucial goods will remain at nothing for a timeframe of 36 months.

This development follows earlier warnings to hike duties on patented drug products, with increases floated as high as 100%.

"This agreement between the United Kingdom bolsters the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and brings long-overdue equity to transatlantic drug exports," a statement noted.

Trade Impact

Drugs constitute one of the Britain's most significant exports to the US, which is easily the biggest buyer for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data indicate that in the year leading up to last September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products valued at £11.1bn to the US. This amount made up a significant portion of British export trade in that span.

"This deal secures work, boosts investment and paves the way for the UK to become a international leader for life sciences," a minister stated.

Specific NHS Changes

The pact includes several notable pledges from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it deems new treatments to be prohibitively costly by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a target to double overall NHS spending on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The sum manufacturers must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be capped at fifteen percent. In the past, repayments topped 20%.

Broader Context

The deal follows a long-running dispute between the drug companies and the UK government over drug pricing and approval rates.

The disagreement were heightened by arguments that American consumers were charged several times more for the same drugs than patients in the Britain and the EU.

In recent months, several major manufacturing plans in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while major funding commitments have been pledged toward US facilities.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS must spend more on treatments, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had shrunk as a share of its total funding over the last ten years.
